BORDEAUX: Pierre Veilletet, an award-winning French journalist and writer, has died at the age of 69, his former paper, the regional daily Sud Ouest, announced on Wednesday.

Veilletet won France's top journalism prize, the prix Albert Londres, for his reporting on the death of Spanish dictator General Francisco Franco in 1975.

He went on to launch an innovative Sunday tabloid edition of the broadsheet regional and was the paper's editor-in-chief in the 1990s.

Veilletet was also a prolific essayist and novelist, a leading member of the press freedom body, Reporters without Borders, and a passionate enthusiast for bull-fighting, motorsport and wine. (AFP)
