Doha: Minister of Education and Higher Education H E Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi participated in sports activities organised by the Ministry in a number of schools to celebrate 11th National Sport Day.
The Minister stressed that it is necessary to focus on sports activities to create health awareness among students. “Regular exercise has an important impact on building sound social and moral values, improving physical, psychological and mental health, and having a role in raising achievement capabilities,” said the Minister. She said that the National Sport Day is very special this year because Qatar is going to host the mega sporting event FIFA World Cup.
“Qatar has become a global centre for sporting events and tournaments. Believing in the great role of sport in the lives of peoples and individuals: health, social and humanitarian. Our country has spared no effort to provide the best possibilities for practicing sport at the individual level,” said the Minister.
The Ministry organised activities at Al Yarmouk Preparatory School for Boys, Maria Al Qibtia Preparatory School for Girls, and Al Andalus Preparatory Secondary Private School for Boys. The sport activities include football, volleyball, basketball, jumping, horse riding, shooting, tennis and traditional games.
Undersecretary at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education Dr. Ibrahim Saleh Al Nuaimi said: “National Sport Day is important and essential as it reminds us that sports are an important part of our lives, especially for school and university students.” This year, he said, a decision was issued to establish two sports federations, the Sports Federation of Schools and the Sports Federation of Universities which show the extent of Qatar’s interest in sports activities, especially in schools and universities.
Al Nuaimi noted the necessity of continuing sports activities in order to build a healthy, aware and educated sports community, because health and sports are two sides of the same coin that guarantee a healthy life.
Omar Abdul Aziz Al Nama, Assistant Undersecretary for Private Education Affairs, said that the Sports Day is a reminder of the need to practice sports. He said that health and education are among basic goals of Qatar.
