The annual Al Asmakh International Symposium of Art began from March 3 and will go on till March 12. This year’s symposium saw an increase in the number of artists — forty international and local artists are taking part this year. Each artist will produce two pieces that will be exhibited at the Wyndham Grand Regency Hotel in Doha on March 11.
Hassan Ibrahim Al Asmakh, Vice President, Business Development at Regency Group Holding, said: “The first edition of the symposium had 20 artists and this year we have more than 40 artists. Hopefully, the number of artists will go up in the upcoming years.”
The main intent behind Al Asmakh International Symposium of Arts is to re-brand the Wyndham Grand Regency Hotel as an art Hub and to enrich the Qatari art scene. They are intent on collecting original artworks from the artists, in exchange for promoting the artists’ work and providing all the financial support the artists’ need while producing their own work.
Hassan Al Asmakh explained: “We are providing all financial support for the artists. We only want them to come and produce great artworks. He also pointed out: “We do not impose any theme on the artists; they are free to explore their own themes and work accordingly.”
The second installment of the 2014 Al Asmakh International symposium will take place in December. Hassan Al Asmakh added: “I really want to put the strength on the non-profit aspect of our art direction in the group but the main objective is to build Al Asmakh museum in 10 years’ time, which will include all the paintings we will be collecting.”The Peninsula
