KABUL: The Canadian journalist who was badly injured when her Associated Press colleague was shot dead by a policeman in Afghanistan has been flown to Germany for further medical treatment, the news agency said yesterday.
Kathy Gannon was shot three times in the attack that killed Pulitzer Prize-winning German photographer Anja Niedringhaus on the eve of Saturday’s presidential elections.
“Kathy Gannon has been moved to Germany for further medical evaluation. Funeral plans for Anja Niedringhaus have yet to be finalised,” Paul Colford, director of media relations for the Associated Press, said in a statement.
Gannon, 60, suffered wounds to her shoulder and wrist in the shooting in the eastern province of Khost as she and Niedringhaus, 48, reported on election workers delivering ballot papers.
32 militants killed in raids
Kabul: At least 32 Taliban militants were killed and eight others were injured during counter-terrorism operations in Afghanistan.
The Interior Ministry of Afghanistan issued a statement yesterday saying that the militants were killed or injured during coordinated operations in the past 24 hours, according to the Afghan.
The statement further added that the operations were jointly conducted by Afghan national police, Afghan national army and Afghan intelligence – national directorate of security (NDS) operatives.
At least 11 Taliban militants were also arrested during the operations which were conducted in Kabul, Maidan Wardak, Logar, Kapisa, Ghazni, Kunar, Nuristan and Helmand provinces, interior ministry said.
Taliban militants frequently use improvised explosive device (IED) to target Afghan and coalition security forces.
