Top Maoist gunned down

New Delhi: A top Maoist was killed yesterday in a shoot-out with security forces in Chhattisgarh, an official said here.

Udham Singh, general secretary of the area committee, was killed in a gunfight in Bukmar forest in Rajnandgaon district with joint forces of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and police. According to the ITBP, Udham Singh carried a reward of Rs200,000 on his head.

AIADMK eyes  all 40 seats

Chennai: The ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu yesterday vowed to win all the Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next year’s general elections while condemning the centre for acting against federalism.

At a meeting here, the party’s executive committee passed 16 resolutions, including one in which the party resolved to win 40 Lok Sabha seats (39 in Tamil Nadu and one in Puducherry) in the 2014 general elections.

Monsoon hits Odisha early

Bhubaneswar: The southwest monsoon arrived in Odisha yesterday, two days ahead of its usual schedule, an official said.

“It advanced over some parts of south Odisha and conditions are favourable for further advance of the monsoon over some more parts of the state during next three days,” a senior official of the Bhubaneswar meteorological centre said.

A good monsoon is crucial for the state, which has about 75 percent of its workforce engaged in agriculture.
