DOHA: Some 14 percent of water meant for consumption in the country is wasted through leakage, utility distributor, Kahramaa, has said.
The corporation said if buildings are properly insulated, especially if the windows are sealed, 40 percent electricity can be saved (with efficient use of air-conditioners).
Kahramaa said it had carried out studies to find reasons for water and power waste and come up with solutions to help stop waste.
The corporation said it is taking twin measures to prevent the waste — it is focusing on the use of energy-efficient equipment and appliances, and has launched awareness campaign urging people not to waste water and electricity.
The twin measures are part of its campaign (Tarsheed) to help reduce the use of water and power, especially during Ramadan.
Kahramaa has signed a deal with the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs whereby imams will be urged to focus in their religious lectures and sermons during the holy month on the importance of conserving electricity and water. The use of water and electricity is increased in mosques during Ramadan, so the focus of the rationalisation campaign continues to help reduce waste there.
As part of the campaign, pamphlets have been printed in Arabic, English, Hindi, Urdu  and Malayalam for distribution to the public, stressing the importance of conserving energy and water during the holy month.
Deals have also been signed with Ezdan Real Estate Company and Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, among other entities, to launch the ‘Tarsheed’ campaign.
Kahramaa said that for the second year it has launched a Ramadan contest as part of ‘Tarsheed’ to highlight the importance of conserving precious utilities.
Details of the contest are broadcast daily on Qatar TV and on Kahramaa’s YouTube and via social media and smartphones.
Subscribers can tweet answers @TarsheedQatar and #TarsheedRamadan. One winner is announced daily, Kahramaa said in a statement.
