DOHA: Commercial kidney transplant is unsafe and causes death or restarts dialysis, said Dr Riadh Fadhil, Director of the Qatar Organ Donation Centre (Hiba) yesterday.

According to him, 10 percent of people who have travelled to other countries and got kidneys by paying money to donors and done transplants have died and another 10 percent have returned to dialysis.

Dr Fadhil suggests that family members should be encouraged to become living donors as it’s safe and protects people from the disadvantages of commercial transplants. “Even if someone is sick here and a family member in living in their country is willing to become a donor, we will bring the donor free of charge and conduct the surgery,” said Dr Fadhil. Individuals can donate one of their kidneys and part of their liver while they are alive to save or significantly improve the quality of other’s life. The Peninsula
