DOHA: While the controversy about Saudi Arabia banning women from driving rages, Qatar has issued driving licences to a number of Saudi women. Last year alone, licences were issued to an unidentified number of Saudi women here.
Qatar’s traffic chief, Brigadier Mohamed Saad Al Kharji, told a symposium at Dammam University in Saudi Arabia recently that his country did not discriminate against women in the matter of issuing driving licences.
Local Arabic daily Al Raya reported yesterday that earlier Saudi women used to go to Bahrain, the UAE and other GCC states to get driving licences. Now they are coming to Qatar as well.
