DOHA: Some six million packs of beauty products such as hair colour, bleaching lotions, face packs, foundation creams and eyeliners, among others, were imported from April to September this year and eight percent of the consignments were rejected by the standards agency for not meeting local and regional specifications.
The Qatar General Organisation for Standards and Metrology said in its report for April-September 2014 that 396 shipments of cosmetics were cleared during the period as they met Qatari specifications (GSO 194).
A total of 428 shipments arrived in the country during the period and of these 396 were cleared as they complied with Qatari specifications.
The consignments were accompanied by specification certificates as required by law, and reports from accredited laboratories.
Thirty-two consignments were rejected, representing 8 per cent of the total that shows that the vast majority of importers were following the Qatari and unified GCC specifications.
The organisation, which operates under the Ministry of Environment, said the rejections were due to lack of specification certificates and reports by accredited laboratories abroad.
During the period, some 646 shipments (about 4 million packs) of children’s toys and games arrived and 59 were rejected as they didn’t meet Qatari standards and specifications and unified GCC specifications. The rejections were because of lack of specification certificates.
The organisation studied 1,222 specification certificates and reports on cosmetic products, and some 878 on children’s games and toys.
