Qatar gears up to mark National Sport Day

DOHA: Government organisations and private companies are set for biggest National Sport Day (NSD) celebration tomorrow.
While most companies have geared up for a big bash, others started sport activities last week in the run-up to the main event.
Qatar Olympic Committee’s (QOC) Sport Zone welcomed thousands of visitors to its huge line-up of sport, health and entertainment activities since it opened to the public on Thursday. 
Highlights of tomorrow’s events are a sport walk on the Corniche and traditional Al Shawahef rowing championship with a prize of QR4m. 
While the Sport Zone is the main hub of celebrations, Aspire, The Pearl Qatar, Souq Waqif and Katara will also witness sport-related activities. Katara will host over 83 activities for all ages, in cooperation with sports federations and other entities, General Manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti told a press conference yesterday.
Events will start at 7am tomorrow and run until 3am the next day. They include a family marathon relay race, yoga for women, squash, soccer and tennis, among others. The Ministry of Transport and its stakeholders will come together for a day of activities for children and adults such as beach volleyball, relay race and sack race, among others.
Qatar Foundation is hosting activities at six venues in the Education City, including Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Awsaj Recreation Centre, Community Venue, Recreation Centre, Al Shaqab and Cricket Ground.
The Qatar University Student Activities Department’s Sport and Recreation Section will hold sporting and fitness events at Katara and QU campus. Events include boat races, endurance games and gliding.
Georgetown University in Qatar will celebrate the day in the morning with a run/walk circuit, barbecue breakfast, miniature golf, 10-pin bowling croquet, tug-of-war and a fun for all football match on an inflatable pitch.
Activities to spread awareness about the importance of sports and their role in the community will be organised by Primary Health Care Corporation at Aspire Park tomorrow, attended by its health centres and departments.
Total will hold the finals of tennis competitions in men, women and kids categories as part of Total Cup, an annual sports tourney which gathers the company’s employees and their families.
Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil Qatar will again mark the day at the QP’s Al Ghazal Club and the RAA Boat and Beach Club from 7am to 5pm. Joint activities include fitness workouts, basketball shooting, walking marathons for men and women, and football matches, among others.
Oryx GTL is inviting the community to take part in its Weight Loss Campaign in which participants can have their BMI measured and come back after two months to measure it again. Two football pitches at the Kharatiyat Football Club will be the venue of sport and fun activities for the entire family.
Under the umbrella of Action on Diabetes, Maersk Oil Qatar is organising events at Aspire Zone with five-a- side football, volleyball, basketball and aerobics as well as diabetes screening and awareness campaign.
Over 4,000 people are expected to participate in activities lined up by Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco) and its sister company Qatofin. The day’s events at Qapco Club include an attempt to break the World Guinness Record for ‘the most consecutive football passes’ set 12 years ago in Hong Kong.
Grand Heritage Doha Hotel is introducing a new concept, with the Sports Family of the Year competition for its employees and their families. In groups of family members and relatives, participants will compete in sports and challenges and the family that gathers the most points will be declared Sports Family of the Year.’
