DOHA: The 30th GCC Traffic Week began yesterday to create awareness about road safety, reduce accidents and find solutions to traffic problems.
Staff Major General Saad bin Jassim Al Khulaifi, Director General, Public Security, inaugurated the event at Darb El-Saai.
Earlier, he met heads of delegations from traffic departments of other GCC countries and the Jordanian team participating in activities during the week.
He said the traffic week is a good opportunity to exchange expertise, information and data to enhance safety on the roads.
Being held under the theme ‘Your Safety is Our Goal’, week- long events include awareness programmes, lectures and workshops.
Special booths at Darb El-Saai have been set up by organisations involved in road safety.
Al Khulaifi and other delegates toured the venue and school students staged a play on road safety.
Experts involved in awareness campaigns and others who provide clinical support for people affected by accidents said the public should be provided with more knowledge on how to prevent accidents and be safe.
‘Kulluna’ a national safety campaign, is highlighting the importance of car seats for children.
Kulluna Chairman, Dr Khalid Abdulnoor Saifeldeen, said, “Accidents could be prevented, we do as much as we can to create awareness about the necessity of car seats for children.”
A ‘Traffic Village- Kids Zone’ is holding educational games as part of ‘Safety First’ and ‘Wear Seat Belts’ campaigns.
Many institutions, have booths under the ‘One Second’ national road safety programme. They include Qatar Red Crescent, Qatar Foundation for Elderly Care, Rumailah Hospital, Hamad Medical Corporation’s Ambulance Service.
“We get at least one new patient everyday, the number of people coming for treatment after accidents is increasing,” said Samah Maher Hegal, Case Manager, Rumailah Hospital.
“We give multiple disciplinary treatments to people to help them recover from accident trauma and physical disability. It’s always better to avoid such situations and prevent road accidents,” she added.
A separate area has been allocated to create awareness about preventing accidents in the desert.
