LAHORE: The Punjab government has decided to computerise arms licensing in the province in a bid to curb illegal weapons and improve law and order.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the provincial government and the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) in this regard yesterday.
Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar were the chief guests at the ceremony.
Punjab Home Secretary Azam Suleman and Nadra acting chairman Shahid Hamid signed the document.
Under the agreement, the existing system of issuance of arms licenses would be replaced with a consolidated computerised license information management system. All old licenses will be replaced with new computerised chip cards under a phased programmed.
In the first phase, five Punjab districts Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi and Multan have been chosen for data entry of the project to be completed within 140 days.
35 militants killed in raids
Kabul: At least 35 Taliban militants were killed in joint operations launched by Afghan security forces and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan (ISAF) during the past twenty-four hours in different regions of the country.
Afghanistan’s Interior Ministry said in a statement today that Afghan forces carried out with ISAF several joint operations killing 35 Taliban militants, injuring six others, and arresting 19 others.
The statement added that the operations tool place in Nangarhar, Balkh, Kandahar, Logar, Ghazni, Kunar provinces.
The security forces seized large quantities of heavy and light weapons. However, the statement did not say if there were any casualties on the security forces. AGENCIES
