Graft charges against Berlusconi filed

ROME: Italian prosecutors filed charges against former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi for allegedly bribing a left-wing senator ¤3m ($3.9m) to join his party. The announcement from the prosecutor’s office in Naples comes a day after a Milan court upheld Berlusconi’s conviction in a separate case of tax fraud linked to his Mediaset business empire. Prosecutors allege that the media baron paid off senator Sergio De Gregorio after parliamentary elections in 2006 won by a centre-left coalition led by Romano Prodi by just a handful of votes.

Founder of fashion house Missoni dies 

 

MILAN: Ottavio Missoni, founder of the global family fashion empire that spawned the no-bra look and revolutionised textile patterns with its trademark bold stripes and zig-zag patterns, died yesterday aged 92. Missoni, known by his nickname “Tai,” died during the night in the northern town of Sumirago, at the family home next to the company’s factory. He had been hospitalised for heart problems.

Boston bomber suspect ‘entombed’

 

NEW YORK: Slain Boston Marathon bomber suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev has finally been buried, ending a growing row over what to do with his body, police in the Massachusetts town of Worcester said yesterday. “As a result of our public appeal for help, a courageous and compassionate individual came forward to provide the assistance needed to properly bury the deceased,” the police department said on its website. “His body is no longer in the City of Worcester and is now entombed,” the statement said.
