DOHA: Public utility Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has begun installing smart electricity and water meters in homes and commercial and industrial premises.
The meters are being installed for free. During the initial phase of the project, some meters have been installed in a few buildings in the Al Sadd locality.
All existing water and power meters are expected to be replaced in the country with new ones by 2016, Al Sharq reported yesterday.
The new meters can be read with a remote reading device and will be connected to a central monitoring system.
“Kahramaa has launched successfully the project of smart meters that is the latest technique of meter-reading in the world,” said the Minister of Energy and Industry, H E Dr Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada.
The project aims to improve the quality of services to subscribers. The new meters will also help the ongoing campaign by Kahramaa to save power and water.
