DOHA: The Ministry of Environment has announced specifications for electrical products, including cables, water heaters, ovens, toasters and microwave ovens.
Products that fail to meet Qatari Standards (QS) 1-60335 IEC and QS 21-2-60335 IEC will be banned from entering the country from February next year.
Specifications have been fixed as 240V or 220V for Single Phase and 415V for Three Phase. Frequency should be 50hertz.
Products that fail to meet specifications will not be allowed to enter the market nor be sold here, Qatar News Agency said yesterday, quoting a statement from Qatar Authority for Standards and Specifications at the ministry.
Specifications have been made mandatory as part of the second phase of a campaign launched by the ministry to control the import and sale of substandard and counterfeit products in the country.
New regulations aim at improving the quality of products and help consumers to have the best products, said the ministry.
Importers of electrical products will be required to produce a certificate from an authorised laboratory, along with other required documents, from the country of origin.
Once regulations take effect, the ministry will conduct intensified inspections to ensure that products that do not meet Qatari specifications are not sold in the local market.
The first phase of the campaign launched in 2010 mainly covered exhaust fans and fans.
