Pool: Gama stuns Bustamante; Appleton advances

DOHA: Portugal’s  Manuel  Gama stunned Francisco Bustamante of the Philippines 9-6 to advance to the Round-of-64 knockout stage of the World 9-Ball Pool Championship at Al Arabi Indoor Hall here yesterday. 

Bustamante, seeking his second World 9-Ball crown after topping the 2010 edition, will now have to try his luck of qualifing for the next stage through the losers bracket. 

On Saturday, Bustamante, had opened his title bid with a narrow 9-7 victory over Mario Morra. 

Also making it to the next stage were defending champion Darren Appleton of England, Mika Immonen of Finland and Dennis Orcollo of the Philippines.

The Englishman defeated Jeong Young of Korea 9-5 to book a place in the next stage. 

Immonen edged past Jeffery De Luna of the Phillipines 9–6, while Orcollo got past the challenge of  Tomasz Kaplan of Poland 9–4.

Of the two Qatari players in action yesterday, both of them lost their matches. Waleed Majed went down to Ko Pin Yi of Taiwan 9-4 and David Alcaide of Spain defeated Mohanna Al Obaidly 9-5.
