DOHA: The Qatar Fuel Company (Woqod) has received an approval from the Civil Defence Department to display and sell cooking gas cylinders at petrol stations, officials have revealed.
In a statement, Woqod said it is through its professional team selecting safe places to display Shafaf cylinders with guidance from Civil Defence, reported Local Arabic daily Al Raya.
On reports about the fears of some residents over cylinders returning to petrol stations, Woqod said there were no risks involved in selling cylinders at the stations, citing  European and GCC countries were safety conditions and procedures are in place.
It said the high demand for transparent cylinders in Qatar has led to the sale of cylinders in 200 supermarkets and it was safe to sell them at petrol stations.
The advantage of Shafaf cylinders is that it does not explode even when there is fire in a place where other cylinders can explode due to excessive heat.
Woqod said it is training staff at the stations with the help of Civil Defence in dealing with fire-related emergencies as part of security plans.
The display of gas cylinders was banned following a blaze in Istanbul Restaurant at Landmark petrol station on February 27, as a precautionary measure to tighten security and safety at shops and petrol stations.
Meanwhile, residents complained about a shortage of cylinders in Muather, Al Rayyan, Al Wakra, Umm Salal and other areas.
