The inaugural edition of the Adastra Cup football tournament came to a close last Friday in thrilling style, after GWC won the trophy with a sudden death win over Ishield WLL in the final.
As both teams were locked at 1-1 at the end of normal time, the game headed into penalties where GWC emerged victorious to lift the title.
Former Indian international star IM Vijayan, the chief guest of the evening, presented the winners' trophy to GWC players, alongside Mohammed Anvar Sadath, the MD of Adastra WLL. Each player was also awarded an individual trophy.
The first edition of the Adastra Cup was conceived by Adastra WLL as a way to promote sports and healthy living among the engineers and technicans of their client firms. The organizers also hope to promote football activities among different communities in the run up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Speaking at the prize distribution function, Mr. Anvar explained that this tournament was just a start and that Adastra is planning to conduct it every year, after seeing the enthusiasm and interest displayed by the participants.
The Adastra MD also remarked that his firm aims to include other sports as well in the coming months, as part of their desire to help promote sporting activity in the country, in line with Qatar's national development objectives.
