DOHA: Katara DFI Cinema will hold free public screenings of the adventure documentary Maiden Trip as part of National Sport Day celebrations.
Part of the Ajyal Youth Film Series, Maiden Trip will have two screenings today at 3pm and 6pm at Katara Drama Theatre.
The third screening will be on Friday at 4pm at the same venue.
All screenings are free but bookings are required to secure a place. An additional private screening of Maiden Trip for school groups will take place on Thursday. Maiden Trip is a documentary about 14-year-old Laura Dekker who sets out on a two-year voyage as the youngest person to attempt sailing around the world alone.
After a year-long battle with Dutch authorities that sparked a global storm of media scrutiny, Laura finds herself far from land, family and unwanted attention, exploring the world in search of freedom and adventure.
The film won the Audience Award at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival and the Camden International Film Festival.
The regular Katara DFI Cinema series will feature Cannes Jury Prize winner Like Father, Like Son by Hirokazu Kore-eda, one of Japan’s most acclaimed filmmakers.
It will be screened daily from February 13 to 19 at Katara Drama Theatre.
The multi-award-winning drama tells the story of Ryota, an architect, who has worked tirelessly to obtain a perfect life.
But when he and his wife discover that the son they have raised for six years is not biologically theirs, Ryota finds himself faced with a difficult choice: nature or nurture?
This deeply affecting story of a man who must finally come to terms with himself took the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival last year. The Ajyal Youth Film Series aims at encouraging love for cinema among young people in the community, strengthening media literacy for the next generation, and inspiring young people to explore their creative potential.
