Doha: The Bayt.com ‘Millennials in the MENA’ survey revealed that in Qatar, millennials (working professionals aged 35 or under) are considered innovative and hardworking by older peers, and the majority of them (66 percent) prefer entrepreneurship to employment.
According to the survey, 66 percent of respondents under 35 would prefer to have their own businesses rather than being employed while 77 percent aged 35 and above would consider entrepreneurship.
Roughly six in 10 Qatar respondents are employed in large private multinational or local companies (64 percent under 35 and 67 percent aged 35 and above), while those under 35 prefer to work in the public sector.
A third of those aged 35 and above are happy in their current industry, though 35 percent would prefer to work in the public sector, because of the more challenging work and more opportunities to learn on the job.
Four in 10 of respondents agree that unemployment is a significant issue in the country.
Roughly half of respondents say the factor that would encourage them to be more loyal to their company is a good work-life balance.
Career development programmes and good benefits are important loyalty factors for respondents aged 35 and above.
Fairness in salary and remuneration also encourage young people to remain with a company.
Asked what change they would like to bring to their organisation, respondents said they would like to see higher salaries.
Seven out of 10 Qatar respondents would consider relocating to another country to pursue their goals and career prospects. Half of all respondents are willing to sacrifice their personal life to further their career to some extent; almost third are willing to do so to a large extent. The Peninsula
