Katara marks Sport Day

DOHA: Thousands took part in National Sport Day activities at Katara Cultural Village yesterday.
The programme featuring more than 100 activities organised by 49 entities began at 7am at Katara Esplanade. Last year, Katara hosted 83 activities organised by 38 entities. This year’s theme ‘A sound body and a sound mind’ aimed to raise awareness about the importance of sports.
Minister of Economy and Commerce H E Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim Al Thani, Minister of Energy and Industry H E Dr Mohammed bin Saleh Al Sada, Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, Director-General,  Cultural Village Foundation, representatives of government and private entities and sport federations were present. 
“National Sport Day is a Qatari initiative many countries are following. It underlines the importance attached by our state to sports and highlights Qatar as an international hub of sports, with the recent hosting of World Men’s Handball Championship,” said Sheikh Ahmed. 
Activities included beach football, boxing, basketball, wrestling, tennis and taekwondo competitions. Participants were also offered an opportunity to have health tests, include those for  diabetes and high blood pressure.
Dr Al Sada said the annual day seeks to raise awareness about the importance of sports and health and attract participation from all segments of society.
