Doha, Qatar: The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) participated in the activities of National Sport Day 2026, held this year under the slogan “I Chose Sport,” reaffirming its role in supporting national efforts aimed at entrenching the practice of physical activity and raising public awareness of the importance of sport as a human right and a fundamental component of public health and quality of life.
On this occasion Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee, H E Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah affirmed that sport represents an inherent human right, given its direct role in safeguarding human dignity, promoting physical and mental health, and reinforcing the principles of equality and social inclusion, particularly for the most vulnerable groups.
She stated that dedicating an annual National Sport Day in the State of Qatar, with broad participation from various ministries, institutions, and government entities, reflects a clear institutional commitment to promoting a culture of sport and transforming it from a seasonal initiative into a sustainable social behavior aligned with national health and human development policies.
She added that this national commitment has continued even during exceptional periods, as the State has been keen to maintain National Sport Day and implement its activities in accordance with precise health measures, striking a balance between protecting public health and ensuring the continuity of physical activity.
Al Attiyah noted that sport occupies an advanced position within the human rights framework, as a supportive tool for development and peacebuilding, the promotion of tolerance and respect for diversity, and the empowerment of communities, particularly youth, as well as the empowerment of women and girls.
