DOHA: A workshop on monitoring press freedom violations in the Arab region is being held at Concord Doha hotel.

The three-day event is organised by the Doha Centre for Media Freedom (DCMF).

Participants include representatives of various Arab and international media development organisations.

The workshop seeks to identify and evaluate the ongoing monitoring efforts led by regional and international organisations in light of increasing press freedom violations.

It also aims to introduce a unified set of standards for fact-finding, documenting violations and organising advocacy campaigns.

DCMF General Director Jan Keulen said:  “Amid the increased targeting of media and journalists in the region, we all have an obligation to assess the way we address this gloomy reality. In this context, the workshop represents an opportunity to collectively brainstorm about the reality of violations and the means to address it.”

The workshop will discuss the state of media following the Arab Spring to answer the core question of whether respect for press freedoms has increased after regime changes, or violations against media have taken new shapes.

The workshop will also examine increased national-level efforts by non-governmental organisations to monitor and document press freedom violations in countries such as Yemen, Palestine and Tunisia among others.
