DOHA: Two acclaimed Brazilian documentaries will be screened this weekend as part of Doha Film Institute (DFI) Brazil Cinema Showcase celebrating Qatar Brazil 2014 Year of Culture.
The third instalment of the monthly series will screen Only when I Dance by Beadie Finzi and Waste Land by Lucy Walker.
The screenings will take place at Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) auditorium on Friday and Saturday at 4pm and 7pm each night.
In Only when I Dance, Finzi follows two teenage dancers from favelas of Rio de Janeiro as they fight to take control of their destinies by rising through the ranks of an international ballet competition.
If they succeed, it could mean the opportunity to start a new life for their families in a place where there are greater options for the future, and less chance of being drawn into the dangerous world of gangs and drugs.
The uplifting Waste Land highlights the transformative power of art and the beauty of the human spirit.
Top-selling contemporary artist Vik Muniz takes viewers on an emotional journey from Jardim Gramacho, the world’s largest landfill outlaying Rio de Janeiro, to the heights of international art stardom.
Muniz collaborates with brilliant catadores, pickers of recyclable materials, true Shakespearean characters who live and work in the garbage.
