DOHA: The fourth Create & Inspire regional art competition will be launched on Friday at Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) under the theme ‘The World is not Black and White’, inspired by the Qatar Brazil 2014 Year of Culture.
Run by the Crossway Foundation in partnership with Art Jameel and Qatar Museums Authority, the contest provide 12 winners with the opportunity to travel to Brazil on a creative adventure of a lifetime.
“A black and white world is one with limited variety. Colour represents diversity, multiple opinions and openness.
“Experiencing different parts of the world first hand helps us better understand ourselves and others,” said Salma Tuqan, Contemporary Middle East Curator, Victoria and Albert Museum and Trustee of the foundation.
To mark the launch of the competition, the foundation has invited renowned Brazilian artist Alexandre Orion to lead a special graffiti workshop at MIA Park. The free event will take place on Friday from 2pm to 5pm.
And to mark the online launch of the competition, the foundation has collaborated with Saudi Arabia’s leading online video network, Cinema of Arabia, to release an exclusive short film. Cinema of Arabia is co-founded by Mohammad Makki, the 2011 Create & Inspire competition winner.
The collaboration symbolises the spirit of the competition which looks at linking an emerging generation of young artists in the Gulf and the UK with South America.
About the Create & Inspire initiative, Mohanna Tayeb, the 2013 winner, said: “‘Your idea, your action, your impact’ best describes the reason I entered the competition; to have the opportunity to showcase my work and thoughts, inspire my community and make a positive change in my society.”
About Create & Inspire 2014, Fady Jameel, President of Art Jameel, said: “The initiative aims to identify creative talents in the Gulf and equip young artists with skills and experiences which can be applied to their communities upon their return.”
