BAALBEK, Lebanon: Seven rockets launched from Syria on Tuesday hit the eastern Lebanese town of Hermel, a bastion of the Shiite group Hezbollah, causing damage but no casualties, a security official told AFP.
The incident was the latest in a series of cross-border rocket attacks on Shiite areas of Lebanon.
"Six rockets landed in the town of Hermel, and a seventh hit its outskirts," the security official said.
Such attacks have escalated ever since Syrian troops backed by fighters from Hezbollah, a staunch ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, retook the central Syrian town of Qusayr last week.
Lebanon has officially maintained a policy of neutrality in Syria's conflict, but powerful Hezbollah has played a crucial role in the fighting in Syria.
Lebanon is sharply divided along sectarian lines, which have been emphasised by the conflict in Syria.
The Sunni-led March 14 opposition supports the revolt against Assad, which is dominated by Sunnis, while Hezbollah and its allies back Assad's forces. (AFP)
