ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of Pakistan, Syed Khurshid Shah, has proposed the names of retired judges Rana Bhagwandas and Sardar Raza for the top post of chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
He had earlier proposed the name of Justice (retd) Mamoon Qazi, who declined the offer. In his place, the name of Justice Bhagwandas has been
proposed.
Shah has written a letter to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif proposing the two names.
He called for purposeful consultation for the appointment of the chairman of NAB and mentioned a judgment of the Supreme Court in this
regard.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has proposed the names of Justice (retd) Rehmat Hussain Jaffery and Khawaja Zaheer for the
post.
Shah has stated in his letter that he does not oppose the names proposed by the prime minister but the two names suggested by him are of credible personalities.
The leader of the opposition added that no one could raise any objection on the credibility of these two personalities.
Talking to the newsmen here yesterday, Syed Khurshid Shah said it was now up to the government to see how it would hold consultations over the appointment.
Justice Bhagwandas was the acting CJP during the 2007 judicial crisis in Pakistan and also briefly became the acting Chief Justice of Pakistan when the incumbent, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, went on foreign tours in 2005 and 2006.
He became the first Hindu and the second non-Muslim to serve as the chief of the highest court in Pakistan.
