Nairobi: Kenyan President William Ruto has approved the appointment of a new chairman and six commissioners to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), a move deemed significant given the country's complex electoral history.

According to an official presidential statement, the newly appointed officials will serve a six-year term and are scheduled to take the constitutional oath of office later Friday.

The appointments come as Kenya prepares for its next general elections in 2027, amid rising domestic tensions marked by widespread youth-led protests against increasing living costs.

The political climate remains sensitive, particularly after the suspension of four IEBC commissioners in December 2022.

These commissioners had contested the results of the presidential election held earlier that year, a challenge that escalated to the Supreme Court, which ultimately upheld Ruto's victory and dismissed allegations of vote-counting irregularities.
