Qatar will open their campaign against Iran on September 10.
Doha, Qatar: The draw for the men’s basketball competition at the 20th Asian Games ‘Aichi–Nagoya 2026’ has placed Qatar in Group B alongside Iran, Jordan, and Chinese Taipei.
The Asian Games will be held in Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4.
The organising committee confirmed the groups and schedule for the men’s basketball tournament, featuring 12 teams divided into three groups of four. Qatar was drawn into Group B with Iran, Jordan, and Chinese Taipei. Group A includes Japan, Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia, while Group C features China, the Philippines, Bahrain, and Kazakhstan.
Qatar will open their campaign against Iran on September 10, in the first Group B fixture. The team will then face Jordan on September 12 before concluding the preliminary round against Chinese Taipei on September 13.
The group stage runs until September 14, followed by the knockout phase beginning with the quarterfinals on September 16. The semifinals are scheduled for September 18, while the men’s basketball competition will conclude on September 20 with the third‑place playoff and the championship final.
Qatar’s participation in Nagoya comes against the backdrop of a distinguished history for the national basketball team (5×5). The team achieved a milestone by qualifying for the FIBA Basketball World Cup for the first time in 2006, when Japan hosted the tournament. That achievement marked a turning point in Qatari basketball, proving the team’s ability to compete beyond regional and continental levels.
On the continental stage, Qatar have twice won bronze medals at the FIBA Asia Cup, in 2003 and 2005. The national team also captured the Asian Challenge Cup title in 2004, adding a prestigious gold medal to its record.
Regionally, Qatar have maintained a strong presence through multiple participations in the Gulf Championship and the West Asia Championship, securing several titles and building a long legacy in regional competitions.
