DOHA: Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) has drilled 22 wells in Sri Lanka at a cost of QR365,000 to provide safe drinking water and water for irrigation.
The project benefiting about 8,275 people in nine governorates and 22 villages in central and eastern Sri Lanka was part of QRC’s sustainable development programmes covering water, sanitation and food security in the country.
It includes seven artesian wells with pumps and tanks with capacity between 8,000 and 12,500 litres and 15 shallow wells, including five with pumps and storage tanks with a capacity of 2,000 litres.
“QRC’s mission is based on mobilisation of communities to face crises and humanitarian tragedies and enjoy a safe and dignified life,” said Secretary General Saleh Al Mohannadi.
“The project covers two key areas: Hygiene and public health, by providing potable water and food security for families through the provision of irrigation water for the production of fruits and vegetables to help achieve self-sufficiency,” he added.
