DOHA: With more children entering schools with health or mental health problems, more than 200 schools nurses have been assigned to take care of Independent school students. The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) said yesterday that it had provided 54 nurses to 54 boys Independent schools and 155 nurses to 171 girls Independent schools. These nurses provide preventive services, early identification of problems, interventions, and referrals to foster health and educational success.
They are also responsible for daily monitoring of school facilities and presence in the school clinic, the safety and health of the school environment and the food and juices sold in the school cafeteria, and constant follow up with students suffering from chronic diseases or incidents that happen at the school premises. “There is a recognised relationship between health and learning, as there is between school nurse availability and student well-being and educational success. The role of the school nurse encompasses both health and educational goals,” said Buthaina Al Naqeeb, PHCC School Nurse Supervisor in a press statement issued yesterday.
“School nurses play a crucial role in the provision of school health to children and youth. They are members of the school health services team and their relation to children with special care needs”, she added.
Buthaina also explained that their valuable work encompasses: providing health education by giving health information to individual students and groups of students, assisting health education curriculum development teams and offering programs for staff, families, and the community. The Peninsula
