Metro rail project gathers speed

DOHA: Qatar’s Metro Rail project gained fresh momentum yesterday with the groundbreaking ceremony of the Msheireb station, the central hub of the rail network.

Situated in the heart of the rail network, the flagship station would see the intersection of the Red, Green and Golden lines. The Red and Green lines will run parallel through the station at the same level.

“This is a clear message that Qatar is moving forward steadily and is looking to a bright future and prosperity through long-term vision for the betterment of society and its citizens”, Saad Al Muhannadi, Chef Executive Officer, Qatar Rail, said after the groundbreaking ceremony.

“Today’s function marks an important day, signalling a new era of modern transport system that will boost the country’s economy,” said Abdulla Ali Subaie, Managing Director of Qatar Rail.

The keys station is located in a major Centre of Doha’s redevelopment area, under Msheireb Properties’ “Msheireb Downtown Doha”, with high-rise structures above it.

The station will play a major role in reviving the old commercial heart of the city at the location and to bring people back to this historically significant part of the city.

 

Situated at the heart of the rail network, the underground station will see the intersection of Red, Green, and Golden Lines. The Red and Green metro lines will run parallel through the station at the same level in an approximate north-south direction. The Golden Line crosses the alignment of the Red/Green lines to create an X-type Station. The station is located between Al Diwan Station and Al Matar/B-Ring on the Red line, and Al Adhwa and Doha Souq on the Golden line.
The Green and Red Line station size, including technical rooms and emergency exits, is 190m long and 60m wide. The Golden Line station size, including technical rooms and emergency exits, is 190m long and 30m wide.
Msheireb Station has major construction interfaces with Phase 4 of the Msheireb Downtown Doha development. Qatar Rail and Msheireb Properties have collaborated to ensure, that the design of Msheireb Station is harmonious with Msheireb Properties aims and priorities properties aims and priorities for Phase 4 of the Msheireb Downtown Doha development. Qatar Rail and Msheireb Project have agreed to locate the station partially inside the development boundary. 
A major entrance of the station complex and an entrance of the station complex and an entrance plaza will be located on land to the south of Wadi Msheireb Street. The first phase Metro Rail will have three tunnels, covering a total length of an estimated 60km.
Tunnel No.1 will link the New Doha International Airport (NDIA), West Bay, Katara and Golf Course.
Tunnel No.2 will link Msheireb and Education City.
Tunnel No.3 will link NDUA, Qatar Museum of Islamic Arts and Al Wab
