DOHA: Some 29 Indian fishermen from the neighboring UAE who were yesterday sentenced by a special court to two weeks in jail for having crossed into the Qatari waters on September 30 are to be released on Monday.
Their two weeks of incarnation ends on Sunday, as the fishermen have been in custody since September 30.
A source familiar with the case told The Peninsula yesterday that the Indian embassy will try to complete the necessary formalities for their release on October 14 despite Eid Al Adha holidays beginning from tomorrow.
The holidays actually end on October 20, but the source said that the embassy was hopeful of arranging for their release on October 14 as some officials will be on duty during the holiday.
The source said the 29 fishermen will be sent back to the UAE after their release where they are employed. “The court this time didn’t impose any fines,” the source said.
A release from the South Asian Fishermen Fraternity (SAFF) based in Kanyakumari in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, meanwhile, said yesterday that it had informed the families of the arrested fishermen of the court verdict.
SAFF gave the names of the fishermen as Sahaya Jeniman, Jeeva, Arulanathan, Kalairasan, Kanishtus, Antony Rinto, Korgolias, Sesaiah, Johnsan, Soosai, Shayam and Amala Roopan, a captain.
The others include John Kitan, Sahaya Jaspin, Bedhin, Liyon Mariya, Reegan, Edwin, Deenathayalan, Prince Kumar, Thilak, Franklin, Johson Dhasan, Cyrilraj, Rego Reji, Arun Peter, Joseph Nasarath, Godwin Ospin and Benito Vincent, a captain.
