New York: At the initiative of the Permanent Delegation of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, a high-level meeting was held on the sidelines of the UN Social, Humanitarian Cultural Affairs Committee (Third Committee), and in conjunction with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), to review the regulatory, administrative and technical procedures taken by Qatar in preparation for the Thirteenth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice due to be held in Doha next year.
Opening the meeting, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, explained that the aim of the meeting was to brief the member states on the regulatory procedures taken by Qatar to host the United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice which will be held in Doha from April 12 to 19, 2015 under the theme of “Integrating crime prevention and criminal justice into the wider United Nations agenda to address social and economic challenges and to promote the rule of law at the national and international levels, and public participation.”
Dr Ahmed Hassan Al Hammadi , Director of Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Vice-President of the Organising Committee of the Thirteenth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, reviewed the ongoing preparations for the conference, and the regulatory procedures taken by the Organising Committee to prepare for the conference.
He stressed in a statement that Qatar in collaboration with the UNODC, plays an active role in matters relating to preparations for the conference, which have reached an advanced stage, stressing that by taking this step towards hosting this international conference, Qatar takes on a national, regional, international and even a humane responsibility, to organise an international gathering of heads of states and governments, policy makers and policy implementers, civil society organisations in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice aimed to addressing the escalating challenges posed by organized crime, drugs and terrorism, towards reaching a safer world and a fairer criminal system.
UNODC Executive Director Yury Fedotov, praised Qatar’s hosting of the Thirteenth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, stressing the importance of holding the conference and calling on member states to participate effectively at the highest levels to address the challenges posed by crime and justice criminal.
Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Vienna, Ambassador Ali Khalfan Al Mansouri, reviewed the preparatory steps taken by the Permanent Mission in Vienna prior to the conference, through coordination with the UNDOC or the ongoing consultations with the member states in order to reach a common ground to ensure unanimity, consensus, international cooperation, effective responses to emerging crimes, the challenges of the rule of law to support sustainable development, and national approaches to promote public participation in crime prevention and criminal justice.
