ISLAMABAD: A total of 10,832,898 children in Pakistan have been vaccinated against polio on the first day of this year’s last three-day national polio immunisation campaign, according to the National Emergency Operations Cell (EOC).
Punjab vaccinated 5,968,789 children on the first day. Similarly, 441,886 children were vaccinated in Balochistan, 1,855,827 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 2,204,885 in Sindh while Gilgit-Baltistan and Fata vaccinated 54,755 and 162,974 children respectively, on the first day.
A total of 81,482 children were vaccinated in Islamabad.
The campaign in Islamabad was also postponed anticipating political protests in the city and deployment of security forces. Meanwhile, in Gujranwala, a man threatening the polio team was arrested.
The Prime Minister’s focal person on polio has strongly condemned the killing of a polio worker in Faisalabad and has termed it a supreme sacrifice in the larger interest of humanity and future of Pakistan.
Expressing concern over the killing of the polio worker, Ayesha Raza Farooq urged authorities to book the perpetrators.
The district management of Faisalabad has decided to convene a meeting with CPO, Faisalabad, to review the security apparatus for polio teams.
An inquiry into the incident has been ordered by the Punjab government.
