DOHA: Ashghal will tomorrow launch a national plan for road safety, which is expected to bring in changes to traffic rules and regulations and cover all aspects of safety of individuals and vehicles on the roads.

The plan will cover all issues related to road safety, such as road design and health and traffic awareness, Al Sharq reported yesterday.

Ashghal had last year invited bids from international consultants to prepare a general strategy for road safety in the country.

A nine-member committee headed by the Minister of State for Internal Affairs H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani was formed to address the issue.

The members of the committee represent Ashghal, Supreme Council of Health, Supreme Education Council, Supreme Council for Family Affairs, Ministry of Defence and Qatar Media Authority.

It is expected that under the plan, traffic rules and regulations will be reviewed to ensure smooth and safe traffic on the roads.

Changes are also expected in the current system of issuing the driver’s licence.

Fines and other punishments for traffic violations are expected to be addressed in detail in the new plan.THE PENINSULA
