LAHORE: The Palaeontology team of Zoology Department of Punjab University (PU) has claimed to discover nine million years old Hominoid fossils from Nagri Village, District Chakwal.
The research team headed by Prof Dr Muhammad Akhtar along with faculty members, including Dr Muhammad Akbar Khan, Dr Abdul Majid Khan and PhD research students while working in the vicinity of the Nagri village discovered the teeth of the extinct hominoids along with other mammalian fossils.
Dr Akhtar said the discovered fossils would help identify the type of hominoids living in the region in the prehistoric times.
US consulate staff shot dead
PESHAWAR: Unknown gunmen on Monday shot dead a Pakistani employee of the US consulate in the northwestern city of Peshawar, officials said.
Two gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire on Faisal Saeed, 30, outside his residence in Peshawar, senior police official Najibur Rehman said.
Rehman identified Saeed as a former employee of the US consulate in Peshawar, but the US embassy in Islamabad said he was a staff member.
“Local authorities are investigating a tragic incident that has affected a Pakistani national US Consulate Peshawar employee,” a US Embassy spokeswoman said in a statement.
“We strongly condemn this brutal and senseless death, and express our heartfelt condolences to the family,” she said.
Five rebels killed in raids
Kabul: At least five Taliban militants were killed and 18 others were detained during military operations by Afghan national security forces.
The Interior Ministry of Afghanistan said in a statement that the operations were jointly conducted by Afghan army, Afghan police and Afghan intelligence – National Directorate of Security (NDS) during the past 24 hours.
Interior ministry confirmed that five Taliban militants were killed, four militants were injured and 18 others were detained during the operations.
Afghan national security forces also seized weapons, ammunition and explosives during the military operations, interior ministry added in its statement. AGENCIES
