DOHA: Al Rayyan became the second relegated club to Qatar’s Second Division despite beating bottom side Muaither 4-2 in the final game of the season yesterday.
The win took the seven-time champions’ tally to 29 points but with their relegation rivals Qatar SC and Al Wakra winning their respective games and Al Kharaitiyat SC having a superior goal difference, Al Rayyan still accompanied already-relegated Muaither to the lower division.
Had Qatar SC or Al Wakra failed to win their games, Al Rayyan would have survived.
Qatar SC secured their Qatar Stars League (QSL) status with a comprehensive 5-0 win over title holders Lekhwiya who retained the title by beating Umm Salal in late March.
Al Wakra’s 2-1 narrow win over Al Gharrafa was enough to save them from relegation.
Meanwhile, Al Kharaitiyat’s 3-0 loss to Al Sadd meant they were strongly embroiled in the relegation battle but their superior goal difference to that of Al Rayyan meant they escaped the latter’s fate.
Al Rayyan are relegated for the second time in their history, the first happening over quarter a century ago in 1987. QNA
