Doha: Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) has participated in the 30th session of the Islamic Committee of International Crescent held over two days in Tunis, Tunisia, to discuss ICIC’s annual report.
QRC was represented by Dr Fawzi Oussedik, Head, International Relations, QRC, and Chairman, Islamic Forum for International Humanitarian Law (IFIHL).
The meetings were attended by 17 delegates from members of ICIC and its specialised organs, some heads of diplomatic missions in Tunisia, Mazin Abu Shanab, representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Tunisia, Dr Hesham Youssef, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Sami Nakka, representative of the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr Abdellatif Abid, Vice Secretary-General, the Arab League, Atab and Head of the centre of Tunisia, Dr Muftah Etwilb, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) regional representative, North Africa and Marx Brauman, representative of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The event was opened by Dr Taher Al Cheniti, Secretary-General, Tunisian Red Crescent, who highlighted his national society’s interest in cooperation with components of International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, including ICIC.
In his keynote speech, Ambassador Ali Mahmoud Buhedma, ICIC President, thanked Tunisia for hosting the session, which saw an MoU signed between ICIC and Tunisian Red Crescent.
On the first day, 11 reports were presented in three meetings.
Dr Oussedik made a presentation on IFIHL’s activities and efforts to promote humanitarian values. He also presented a paper on a proposed world day of the International Humanitarian Law, which was approved by a majority.
Another proposal was to adopt a unified Islamic humanitarian approach during the World Humanitarian Summit under the wings of OIC. It was agreed that QRC assign a specialist centre to put this proposal into effect.
Other ICIC reports and proposals were put forward for feedback from participants, including a strategy for social peace in the Islamic world, a social peace centre in Baghdad, and an international conference to protect cultural legacy, particularly after the abuse of civilisational heritage in the region. The session concluded with re-electing Buhedma as ICIC President and Dr Omer Tash as Vice-President.
