Malacañang lauded yesterday the support of the United States to the Philippines – first voiced by President Obama and then reiterated by US Ambassador to the Philippines Philip Goldberg in his remarks at the “Araw ng Kagitingan” rites Thursday – saying that the government will continue to pursue the track it had taken to resolve the territorial dispute.
Goldberg’s remarks came amid the country’s long-running territorial dispute with China in the West Philippine Sea. When he visited Manila last year, President Obama had said that “our commitment to the Philippines under our Mutual Defense Treaty is “ironclad.”
In his visit to Jamaica Thursday, US President Obama scored China for using “its sheer size and muscle to push around small nations in the South China Sea.”
Obama had said the US is concerned that China is not abiding by international norms and rules.
