DOHA: A criminal court has sentenced an Asian woman to one year in jail for selling a forged visa to another woman.
The court has also ordered her deportation after she has served her term.
The convict sold the forged visa at QR6,000 to a woman in a foreign country who was looking for a job overseas.
The doctored visa was sent by the convict to the woman by email. She took an employment visa issued for a company and tempered it using a computer, said a report submitted by the Economic Crimes Combating Unit at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) during the trial, Al Sharq reports.
She replaced the data in the original visa with personal details of the victim and sent it to her.
The latter transferred QR2,000 to the convict through an exchange house apparently as the first instalment. She also mailed her passport copy, said the report.
The convict created a fake email ID on hotmail as general manager of the said company to convince the victim.
The Qatari embassy in the country concerned also confirmed the fraud in a letter to the Public Prosecution.
The embassy said the visa had been forged and it was originally issued for another person, also an Asian. It also confirmed that the victim had sent money for the visa. The convict denied the allegations in the court.
