DOHA: The UAE-based Sun Group International is set to expand its operations to African region. The Group is in talks with government entities in the region.
Talking to The Peninsula, Dr Sundar Menon (pictured), the Group Chairman said the Group is in final rounds of discussions with the Botswana Government authorities. The Sun Group International is also in the process of diversifying its businesses in India and UAE.
The Sun Group International is a transnational concern that has many ventures based in Qatar, the UAE and India.
It owns fleets of ships and road tankers that supply fuel to diverse locations, but has also operated fully equipped fuel stations.
Dr Menon came to the Middle East in 1985 and worked as a business executive. He later ventured out on his own, aggressively growing his business into a multi-million dollar group, one of the leading oil and bunker traders in the Gulf region.
“Many public sector oil companies in the African region are opening up their logistic sector to the private entities. We see huge opportunities in these countries”, Dr Menon said. Listed among the leading businessmen in the Gulf region by Forbes Magazine, Dr Menon is equally renowned for his entrepreneurial achievements and his philanthropic contributions. He is the 2016 recipient of India’s one of the highest civilian honours “Padma Shri”.
“Padma Shri is one of the highest civilian awards. This honour means a lot for me. It will encourage me to do more work in area of social services. I am a member of several charitable trusts and I am planning to undertake more philanthropic initiatives this year,”
Dr Menon’s Trust contributes to the social and educational welfare of the weaker sections of the Indian society. It’s objectives reflect the strong social commitments. Many social welfare schemes have been devised including the education of tribal children, provision of medical aid to the poor and disabled and the arrangement of the community marriages for underprivileged women.
Moreover, the Trust has joined hands with Santhi Medical Information Centre on a Tribal Project in Attapadi, in the southern Indian State of Kerala for the upliftment of the indigenous tribal Population.
Dr Menon, a member of several social welfare trusts in India, believes that India’s education system should generate more ‘employable graduates” rather than producing more and more “un employable” graduates. Currently, his Trust is involved in launching vocational schools in India’s rural areas.
