Doha: The Malaysian Minister of Tourism and Culture Dato’Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz held a press conference at the Renaissance Doha City Centre Hotel in Doha.
The ‘Visit Malaysia Year 2014’ conference gave guests a glimpse of what awaits them in Malaysia, especially during the celebration of the year.
The conference also aimed at expressing Tourism Malaysia’s appreciation to tour operators, media and guests for support in promoting travel to Malaysia.
Abdul Aziz led a delegation which participated in the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) in Dubai, followed by a post-ATM sales mission to Doha, Qatar and Amman.
Malaysian promotional efforts include a programme for Qatar which included courtesy calls by Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA)Chairman Issa bin Mohammed Al Mohannadi and Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker, as well as travel mart, press conference and gala dinner.
Sixteen Malaysian sellers will participate in the travel mart.
Last year, 324,437 west Asian tourists visited Malaysia, and the country also recorded 7,264 tourists from Qatar.
Last year, Tourism Malaysia added another feather to its cap by garnering the Best Global Tourism Advertising Campaign Award at the Fourth Middle East Business Leaders Awards 2013 in Abu Dhabi. The event was organised by Federation of GCC Chambers and The Leaders International.
Al Mohannadi met Abdul Aziz and his delegation at QTA headquarters. The meeting, also attended by Malaysian Ambassador Ahmad Jazri bin Mohamed Johar, discussed cooperation between the two countries, especially in the tourism sector, as well as ways to support and develop it to serve the common interests.
Qatar and Malaysia signed an agreement for economic, trade and technical cooperation in 1975, and an agreement for the establishment of Qatari-Malaysian Joint Committee in 2009. The volume of trade exchange between both countries stood at QR5.8bn in 2012.
