AIIMS student ends life

New Delhi: An MBBS student at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan in his hostel room here, police said yesterday.  Himanshu Katara, in his 20s, was found hanging inside his room number 6 of hostel number 3 around 11.30am.  Admitted to the 2011 batch of medicos, he was in the fourth semester. A suicide note was found from Katara’s possession in which he cited some mental illness which led him to take such an step, said a police officer.

First all-woman commando unit

Gurgaon: The Central Reserve Police Force yesterday introduced its first 30-member all-woman commando squad here, an official said. India’s first paramilitary women commando team, consisting of 30 highly trained women, including two officers, has undergone a tough regimen of three months’ commando training at Jodhpur Police Academy, the official said. “They have been trained in various aspects like hostage crisis, rescuing citizens endangered in terrorist attacks, providing proximate security to visiting female dignitaries, counter-terrorist operations, resolving situations involving vital installations, situations involving high-risk suicidal attacks and providing additional security at special events,” the official said at the paramilitary’s group centre in Kadarpur.

Software to track students via SMS 

 

Thiruvananthapuram: An IT firm here has developed a software that provides instant information about students to parents via SMS and e-mail. IT firm ThoughtRipples has developed the software called Gurusparsh, which will be used by 200 schools in Kerala. Deepak Cherry George, CEO, said Gurusparsh enables teachers and school authorities to send information about students’ absence, class notifications and marks via SMS and e-mail to parents or guardians on their mobile phones.
