Doha, Qatar: Lamine Yamal’s rise has been one of football’s most remarkable stories.

At just 18 years old, the Barcelona winger has already established himself as one of the game’s brightest talents, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup presents another opportunity to showcase his extraordinary potential on the biggest stage.

The tournament in North America will mark Yamal’s first World Cup appearance, a milestone that comes less than three years after his senior debut for FC Barcelona.

On April 29, 2023, he became the youngest player ever to represent Barcelona’s first team when he appeared against Real Betis at the age of 15.

Since then, his development has been rapid. Yamal has helped Barcelona win three La Liga titles, including their most recent trophy last month and the Supercopa de Espana, while also playing a key role in Spain’s UEFA Euro 2024 triumph. He became the youngest player and goalscorer in tournament’s history.

Now, he arrives at the World Cup carrying both expectation and excitement as Spain aim to challenge for the title.

Despite comparisons to some of football’s greatest players, Yamal has consistently insisted on forging his own path.

“I do not want to be the next Messi,” Yamal said. “I want to be myself.”

The teenager has also spoken about the significance of representing his country at football’s most prestigious tournament.

“As a kid playing football, the World Cup has always been a dream,” he said.

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente believes Yamal possesses the mentality required to handle the pressure that comes with being one of the sport’s most talked-about players. The coach has repeatedly praised the winger’s maturity and ability to perform under intense scrutiny.

“Lamine was born for this,” De la Fuente said. “He has a daring character.”

Yamal’s talent has attracted admiration from some of football’s biggest names. Argentina legend Lionel Messi recently identified the Spaniard as the standout talent of the new generation.

“There’s a new generation of players that is very good, but if I have to choose one because of his age, what he has already done, and the future ahead of him, it’s Lamine,” Messi said.

Spain captain Rodri has also backed the teenager to reach the very top of the game.

“One day he’ll win a Ballon d’Or because he’s a beast,” Rodri said.

Meanwhile, France captain Kylian Mbappe praised Yamal’s talent and urged people to allow the youngster to develop without unnecessary pressure.

“He’s a player with a great talent,” Mbappé said.

After recovering from the hamstring injury that briefly disrupted his preparations, Yamal is expected to be available for Spain’s opening Group H match against Cape Verde on June 15.

For a player who has spent his young career breaking records and exceeding expectations, the World Cup represents the next major challenge. If his progress so far is any indication, Yamal could be ready to announce himself as one of football’s defining stars on the sport’s grandest stage.
