ISLAMABAD: Concerns over Malala Yousufzai’s safety have inhibited her interaction with world media at the United Nations and her media advisers and the entourage have kept a tight control over her engagements.

Asked at a press briefing yesterday, UN spokesman Martin Nesriky could not say as to why she was unavailable to the press except to say that Malala would meet UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today afternoon.

However, except for photo sessions no other media interaction was stipulated at the world body’s headquarters. “She will address the UN General Assembly” along with 500 or more students today,” Nesriky added.

During her UN visit, which coincides with her 16th birthday, Malala will share her experiences and raise awareness about the importance of education, particularly for girls around the world.
