New Delhi: Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, whose party lends support to the ruling UPA, met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday reportedly to register his reservations on the food security ordinance, informed sources said.

“It was a regular meeting. I don’t have to discuss what I spoke about with the media,” Mulayam Singh said after the meeting.

The SP chief had opposed the food ordinance, approved by the government last week, saying it was anti-farmer and brought keeping in mind the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

Jharkhand: President’s rule to end

New Delhi: The union cabinet has recommended to President Pranab Mukherjee revocation of central rule in Jharkhand, a minister said yesterday.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari told reporters here while briefing them on cabinet decisions.

President’s rule in the state ends on July 18.

The cabinet’s decision comes after the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha staked claim to form a new government in the state with support from the Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal and Independents. The new alliance claims the support of 43 members in the 82-member state assembly.

New civil aviation regulator

New Delhi: India plans to set up a new regulator for the aviation sector — Civil Aviation Authority — that will replace the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

The union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday gave “in-principle” approval to the civil aviation ministry’s proposal to set up the new regulator.

Addressing the media after the cabinet meeting, Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari said the government would introduce a bill in the upcoming monsoon session of parliament.

He said the proposed regulatory authority would have a chairperson, a director general and seven to nine members, including five full-time members.

One more route to Kedarnath

Dehradun: The army yesterday commenced work on a new route to the rain-ravaged Kedarnath shrine in Uttarakhand.

According to officials, the work is being done at the request of the state government and the National Disaster Response Force.

With heavy rains again lashing the region, helicopters deployed in relief and supply work have been grounded. The pace of rescuing people who are still missing has slowed down.

The land routes to the hills suffered extensive damage during the cloudburst and flash floods of June 16 and 17, blocking access by foot to the revered shrine. Kedarnath and its surrounding areas suffered the most in the natural disaster which claimed hundreds of lives.

A team of soldiers and experts have conducted a reconnaissance of the Kedernath area and started work to open a route along a fresh alignment, the army’s Central Command said.
