DOHA: At least six people — all of them construction workers, understandably from Nepal and India — died after a speeding four-wheel-drive vehicle ran over them in Lusail City yesterday.

Five of the workers died on the spot and  the sixth one succumbed to injuries while on the way to emergency medical care, according to police.

Local vernacular newspaper Varthamanam, however, said that seven people had died.

Quoting sources from the labour camp where the workers had been staying, the daily said four of them died on the spot, while two perished on their way to hospital.

The seventh one succumbed to injuries at the hospital, the daily reported.

According to sources in Al Daayeen Police in whose jurisdiction the area falls, two other workers were injured but their injuries were not serious.

The workers had finished their duty and were waiting for their company transport when the accident occurred.

Al Daayeen Police sources told The Peninsula late last evening that the mishap occurred at 1pm.

They said that some of the workers were lying in the shade along the main road, relaxing after work.

“They were lying in a subway when the four-wheeler suddenly emerged,” the sources said. The four-wheeler came from their right side and ran over them.

It appeared that the driver had lost control of the vehicle.

The nationalities of the deceased could not be ascertained.

However, according to Varthamanam, one of them was an Indian from the southern state of Kerala, while the remaining were from Nepal.

Community sources said the Indian was 30 and unmarried and working in Lusail City as an electrician.

He had arrived in Qatar just three months ago.
