Hyderabad: The Telangana government yesterday presented Rs1 crore to tennis star Sania Mirza for training and to meet other expenses to participate in upcoming Japan and China open tennis tournaments. Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao presented the cheque to her and expressed his best wishes for her victory in both the tournaments. This has made Sania richer by Rs2 crore in less than two months. The chief minister had presented her Rs1 crore cheque before she left for the US Open in July. The Hyderabadi along with her Brazilian partner Bruno Soares last week won mixed doubles title at the US Open. On her return to the city on Sunday, she dedicated her victory to Telangana. She also called on Rao on Tuesday. The Telangana government in July appointed the tennis star as Telangana’s brand ambassador.
N-capable Agni-I missile tested
Bhubaneswar: India yesterday successfully test-fired its indigenously developed, nuclear-capable, surface-to-surface Agni-I missile from a military base in Odisha, a defence official said. The missile, which can strike a target 700km away and can carry a one-tonne nuclear warhead, was tested by the armed forces as part of user trial from a facility on Wheeler Island near Dhamra in Bhadrak district, 170km from here. “It was a perfect launch,” director of the test range M V K V Prasad said. Agni is an intermediate range ballistic missile. It uses solid propulsion booster and a liquid propulsion upper stage, derived from India’s first indigenously developed ballistic missile Prithvi. The test was done by the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), also called Strategic Nuclear Command.
Kerala bars can sell liquor till Sep 30

New Delhi: Bar owners in Kerala, other than five star hotels, will be able to serve liquor till September 30 as the Supreme Court yesterday ordered status quo till this date while asking the state high court to decide the challenge to the notification directing them to shut shop. A bench of Justice Anil R Dave and Justice U U Lalit asked the Kerala High Court to hear the plea by the bar owners who have challenged the state government notification asking them to down shutters. The order was to come into effect from 11pm yesterday. Saying that it would like the matter to be decided by the high court so that it knows what reasons weighed with it in deciding the matter pending before it, the Apex Court hoped that the matter will be decided by September 30.
