The audience at Katara Opera House erupted in deafening applause as performers from the acclaimed National Gugak Center (NGC) of Seoul, South Korea, enthralled them with centuries-old Korean dances at the recent opening of the first-ever Korean Cultural Week.
Dressed in colourful costumes, the dancers performed traditional dance items such as Hakchum (Crane Dance), Buchaechum (Fan Dance), Jindo Bukchum (Jindo Drum Dance) and Salpurichum (Dance of Exorcism), among others.
The NGC is the governing body established to preserve and promote traditional Korean performing arts that are more than 1,000 years old.
Another highlight of the cultural week is a photography exhibition featuring around 50 photos of scenic tourist spots and architectural marvels of South Korea. It runs until October 19 at Building 19.
